I love football, but I can promise you, it’s not all Fayetteville has. Not by a long shot.

I know Tumblr is mostly a fandom-based tool, but football (like other sports) is really just a gigantic, media-corrupted mainstream fandom where you quite literally get to duke it out in front of the world. Many people think sports are stupid and a waste of time. How can you invest so much time into something that, as a fan, doesn’t involve you at all, and, as a player, only involves you beating up the guy in front of you for the sake of 7-points? It’s a game, but it’s a game that means a lot to so many people.
Anyways…
I think I had more thoughts about this yesterday (and last weekend), but I feel like I need to say it, or at least address it, anyway. Because Fayetteville is a sad town today, and I’m very very glad I don’t live there right now.
You can’t find a more dedicated town to its college football team. You just can’t. But football season is ALL FAYETTEVILLE HAS. Not only Fayetteville but the whole state of Arkansas. We don’t have any in-state rivalries (seriously, Arkansas State, we don’t; go away). We just have a whole entire state that *lives* for college football. It’s…you don’t even realize how wonderful it truly is until you’ve lived there.
To watch our team fall apart like that in the span of just a week is so devastatingly heartbreaking. And I’m not even really saying that for the fans. We have *excellent* players that are relying on this season going well so they can have a future in the NFL. This hurts them more than it could ever hurt any of us. I just watch the game. My livelihood does not depend on it (although my emotional stability might).
Bobby Petrino, you ruined this. You did this.
Last night was not a spectacular game for anybody. Alabama showed up and won as we all expected. Props to them. I have all the respect in the world for them (although 52-0 and Saban doesn’t pull out his starting QB until well into having scored over 40 points? We weren’t coming back. It was obvious, so thanks, dude), and I know they will make it to the National Championship and win for the third time in four years. SEC power and all that. I’m glad. But I can’t think of any highlights in that game. No amazing catches or scoring drives. It was a game that just kinda happened, and that was that.
But without Tyler Wilson (who I believe to be the best leader we could possibly ask for), our coaches and players knew they couldn’t win, and they played that way! For a fan, that’s so frustrating and disheartening. We pay money to support your program and watch your games, but you can’t *even try*?
Our offense never gave our poor defense a chance. Our offensive line broke on every play. Our receivers couldn’t catch the ball. Our “head coach” makes a fool of himself every interview and doesn’t have a serious bone in his body.
The only person I have no grief with? Our backup QB. He was starting his first game as a red-shirt freshman against the #1 team in the country. I don’t blame that kid for anything.
The season’s over. Okay, that’s fine. And in any other situation, ‘that’s fine’ would cut it. But the WAY that this all happened is utterly disgusting.
Oh Bobby, we could have had it all.

Hope we play better this weekend. Lord. My liver can’t take another game like that one.
